Surprised someone has not posted this earlier, as I was having the same problem after purchasing a new system. The solution does not require essentials, or any download. Once I changed a few settings, poof!
All the images began appearing in the collageformat again. So, here's how I did it.
Go to settings - Lock screen ( not background). Scroll to bottom of the 'Lock screen' page/window and 'Screen saver settings'. Set 'Screen saver to '(none)'.
Put check in 'On resume, display logon screen' box. ( might not be needed, but for my purposes I want the screen to lock after I'm away from my system).

Set time in minutes in 'Wait:' box to your preference. ( must be less than the sleep or screen power off time settings). OK. Go back to the 'Lock screen' settings. On the drop down menu change the option to 'Slideshow'. Select/add the folder(s) you want displayed in the collage. Below that the link 'Advanced slideshow settings'.

Change the 'Only use pictures that fit my screen' setting to 'off'. Sit back, wait for the chosen time to elapse, and enjoy your show!Now then. So no one blasts me that the photos don't all 'fit' within the collage. They won't all fit perfectly. Depending upon whether the image is landscape or portrait in orientation versus how/where it shows within the collage, while playing, theedges may get trimmed.
A small price to pay for an advertisement free, non third party, collage screen saver.Enjoy!
